WENDRON United’s hopes of earning a third successive South West Peninsula League win were dashed in the most remarkable of ways, with the Dron shipping eight goals at home to Camelford.
Ed Harrison, Connor Rhodes and Tom Ellacott each scored two goals for the rampant Camels, with Matt Andrew and Denham Guild completing Wendron’s miserable afternoon. Harry Roberts scored a late consolation for the hosts.
Wendron came into the game in reasonable form after chalking up wins over St Dennis and Godolphin Atlantic, but they found themselves a goal down inside two minutes when Harrison turned Bobby Hopkinson’s low cross past goalkeeper Adam Peters.
The hosts were possibly caught cold on a chilly afternoon in west Cornwall, but they had little time to warm up before they were picking the ball out of the net for a second time, with Andrew winning possession in Wendron territory and driving a shot past Peters from 20 yards in only the sixth minute.
Wendron slowly got a foothold in the game with Cam Wheat going close with a diving header before he had a goal was ruled out for an earlier handball by Kian Thomas.
But just as the hosts were starting to threaten, the third goal arrived shortly before the break. It was Harrison who bagged his second, playing a good one-two with Hopkinson before curling into the corner from 18 yards.
Hopes of a second-half revival were quickly dashed as the Goats shipped a fourth within minutes of the restart. Charlie Hambly struck the crossbar with a first-time shot from 20 yards, with Rhodes picking up the loose ball, beating his man and firing into the bottom corner.
Hopkinson, Harrison and Andy Boxall all spurned chances to add a fifth as the half wore on before Rhodes obliged in the 73rd minute, finishing off a move at the far post.
Ben Ringrose had a shot blocked before Joe Chapman shot over as Wendron sniffed a late consolation, but it was soon 6-0 when substitute Ellacott drilled a shot into the far corner from the right of the box.
A consolation did arrive in the final minute of the 90 and it came in some style, with substitute Roberts sending the ball into the top corner to deny Josh Colwill a clean sheet.
But the six-goal gap was restored instantly as Ellacott came forward and found a way past Peters, with fellow sub Guild finding time to add an eighth with the last kick of the game in the third minute of injury time.
