An artist from Penryn has been selected by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore as a category finalist of the global Etsy Design Awards.

Ella Carty is a painter with a studio at Krowji in Redruth.

Her popular abstract paintings and prints have put her in the running for the competitive $15,000 USD Grand Prize or one of ten $1,000 USD category prizes.

The Etsy Design Awards receives tens of thousands of entries from around the globe, with category finalists celebrating the most unique and creative items made or curated by its sellers.

Commenting on her entry, Ella said: "This painting is a one off unique painting 'Lichen Covered Rocks'.

"It was inspired by the beautiful lichen covered rocks I find while walking along the coastline of Cornwall where I am lucky enough to live.

"I made the painting using layers of acrylic and metallic inks. I work from drawings, photographs and from memory to make my artwork. I love the intensity of colour that's achievable with these acrylic inks. The colours really pop in this one."

Serving as a Judge for the awards, Drew Barrymore said: "All of these incredible independent sellers, from all over the world, create the most amazing items, and with such heart and passion.

"I love the personal cards and notes from the sellers and these one-of-a-kind items that are often made at home and sometimes with the whole family involved. I’m so happy to be able to honor this incredibly talented group of entrepreneurs.”

The winners of The Etsy Awards will be announced on October 22.
