WENDRON United manager Jack Greenwood cursed a nightmare 15-minute spell that saw his side ship four goals in their 4-1 defeat at Launceston on Saturday.
Still smarting from their 8-1 mauling at home to Camelford seven days earlier, the Dron conceded four times between the 29th minute and the half-time whistle to all but end their hopes of victory by the interval.
Michael O’Neill pulled one back for Greenwood’s side on the hour in a much-improved second half, but it was far too little, too late for the Dron.
“We were in complete control for the first 25 minutes and tested their ‘keeper and didn’t look under any threat at all,” Greenwood said. “We then conceded and then did our usual capitulation from there.
“At 2-0 we would have still been in the game at half-time, but we conceded two really poor goals after that and then at half-time your team talk’s ruined and the game’s pretty much done barring a herculean effort.
“Again, in a 15-minute spell we lost the game, whereas for the rest of the game we were probably the better side. It’s just naivety on our part once again unfortunately.”
It is not the first time that Wendron have conceded multiple times in a disastrous few minutes, having conceded twice in quick succession against St Austell, Helston Athletic and Camelford already this season.
But Greenwood took exception to the manner of their latest leaky spell, which came against a side that he felt his own team should have been beating.
“I almost want to have half-time when we concede a goal and say to them to shut up shop for five or ten minutes and just cool yourselves down,” he said. “You don’t need to win the game straight away, but you can lose it within the next ten minutes. It’s a real difficult one for us to take because we were in complete control.
“Whether it was a hangover from last week or whether conceding a goal meant that our heads dropped and we thought: 'Here we go again,’ but we shouldn’t have done against a Launceston that with the greatest respect, and they thoroughly deserved the win, but they’re a side that ultimately we should have probably been beating.”
