Dobwalls beat the travelling Wendron United by three goals to none on Saturday, capped off by a brilliant free-kick from Matthew Thackeray, writes Ned Laity.
The home side scored early through right-back Jordan Hogan, which really set the tone for the match.
The centre-back pairing of Thackeray and Jordan McCarthy would score the second and third, both from set pieces.
Wendron United made the trip to Dobwalls missing many key players and their manager Jack Greenwood for a period of the match.
The early goal came from a lapse in concentration from Wendron’s back line, as Joe Jasper broke through and squared it for Hogan to tap in.
The rest of the first half consisted of neither team being able to keep the ball for long periods of play, with the score line at the break being 1-0.
The Goats came out in the second half looking much more positive and creating more chances, but ultimately missing that final ball.
However, a stunning free-kick from Thackeray into the top left corner saw the home side double their advantage.
Thackeray had a chance to score another free-kick, but this time his effort rebounded off the post straight to his teammate McCarthy to tap in and make it three.
Greenwood said after the game: "From what I saw and what Mike [O'Neill, assistant] said, we didn't do enough to win the game. We didn't really lay any real punches on them, which is frustrating. We didn't do enough going forward in terms of testing the goalkeeper. Everything was just a little bit tame.
"They're a good side at the moment. They're in form, they're hungry for it. As soon as they got their noses in front you could tell they were not going to give that up easily as good, in-form sides do."
Greenwood also bemoaned the inability to pick a consistent side due to several absent players.
Joe Souch, Dan Tarrant and Joe Chapman were all unavailable for various reasons and Kian Thomas, Fred Walter and Michael O'Neill are out injured, while Ryan Tetley limped off in the first half of Saturday's defeat.
"We're at a stage where we're just struggling to keep a consistent, settled side," Greenwood said. "We've got a lot of quality and a lot of players but we are struggling with a mixture of injuries and unavailability through no fault of anyone's really.
"We've just got to hope it gets better and I do feel like we're on the cusp of all of a sudden having everyone available and having an influx of players again which would be great, but we're not quite there yet."
On a more positive note for the Dron, Greenwood also confirmed that Jacob Grange and Sam Buckley have joined the club from Godolphin Atlantic and Penzance respectively.
Buckley made an instant impression, scoring for the reserves in their 3-1 defeat at home to Hayle in the St Piran League.
