NEWQUAY Airport has temporarily closed with all scheduled flights to and from the airport suspended due to the impact of the second Covid lockdown.
The airport says the aerodrome remains open to support vital services such as Cornwall Air Ambulance, HM Coastguard Search and Rescue, business and military operations.
It is not known when the airport will re-open.
The airport tweeted:
(1/2) Covid-19 Update
— Cornwall Airport NQY (@Newquay_Airport) November 9, 2020
Our terminal is temporarily closed, with all scheduled flights to and from the Airport suspended due to the impact of current Government guidelines on demand.
It is the second time the airport has had to close due to the coronavirus restrictions. It also closed in March, before reopening in July.
In October, Cornwall Council’s head of finance said that Newquay Airport was "not a viable company at the moment" and needed to address its current financial crisis.
It was also revealed that if a bailout is needed, it could affect plans for the spaceport.
The airport has seen a dramatic drop in income this year due to the double hit of the collapse of regional airline FlyBe and the coronavirus pandemic.
Cornwall Council has said that the financial impact has been significant and has earmarked using more than £5million set aside for Spaceport Cornwall to cover the losses if the Government does not provide support.
The council has been working with MPs in Cornwall to press the case for funding to help the airport.
