These seven men are among the convicted criminals jailed in Cornwall this month for crimes including child sex offences, indecent assault, supply of class A drugs - and 26 counts of rape.

Together the men, who include residents of Helston, Camborne and Redruth, are facing a combined 49 years in prison, after being sentenced at Truro Crown Court during November.

They include:

Daniel Benton

Falmouth Packet:

Benton, from Coronation Place in Helston, was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison at Truro Crown Court on Friday, November 6, after being guilty of two counts of sexual assault of a child, and other child sex offences.

Benton, 34, had pleaded guilty to seven charges back in December last year, when he appeared before magistrates in Truro.

These were:

  • Between March 17, 2013 and March 3, 2018 he made indecent photographs, namely 65 category A still images and one movie of a child.
  • Between March 17, 2013 and March 3, 2018 he made indecent photographs, namely 71 category B still images of a child.
  • Between March 17, 2013 and March 3, 2018 he possessed 515 indecent category C photographs, and one movie.
  • On March 8, 2018 he possessed 20 category A still images and four movies.
  • On March 8, 2018 he possessed 39 category B still images and three movies.
  • On March 8, 2018 he possessed 28 category C still images and three movies.
  • On March 8, 2018 he possessed an extreme pornographic image which portrayed in an explicit and realistic way an act which resulted or was likely to result in serious injury.

At that time he had pleaded not guilty to a further seven charges, but following a trial at the crown court he was subsequently also found guilty of two sexual assaults of a child, two counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act and three counts of causing a child to engage in a sexual act.

David Playle

Falmouth Packet:

The 68-year-old from Pendarves Street in Tuckingmill, Camborne, was sentenced to nine years in prison at Truro Crown Court on Friday, November 6.

It was after he was guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child, in a number of historic offences.

Roy Ablett

Falmouth Packet:

The former pub landlord of the Fox and Hounds at Scorrier was back before Truro Crown Court this month, for breaching a restraining order.

He had previously been given a suspended sentence - which included a restraining order preventing him from contacting his partner after he threatened to stab her.

However, 68-year-old Ablett, of no fixed abode, Redruth, admitted breaching this order on a number of occasions in the space of a few hours after leaving the court.

As a result, he was sentenced by the crown court judge to 19 months in prison on Wednesday, November 4.

Alvydas Roberts

Falmouth Packet:

Roberts, whose address was already HM Prison, was sentenced to three years in prison at Truro Crown Court on Thursday, November 19.

The 22-year-old was guilty of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, after being caught in Falmouth.

Brett Bullock

Falmouth Packet:

Repeat offender Bullock is behind bars looking at a 16-year prison sentence, after being guilty of 26 counts of rape.

The 28-year-old, from St Anne's Road in Newquay, appeared before Truro Crown Court on Friday, November 6.

Jordan Palmer

The 24-year-old has more recently had a prison address of HMP Channings Wood, but was formerly of Newquay.

He was sentenced to 15 months in prison at Truro Crown Court on Wednesday, November 11 for burglary and theft.

Blagovest Hadjigueorguiev

Falmouth Packet:

Homeless man Hadjigueorguiev, aged 30, was jailed for ten and a half years at Truro Crown Court on Friday, November 9, for grievous bodily harm and grievous bodily harm with intent.

It was after he doused Newquay police officers PC Darral Mares and PC Alan Lenton in petrol as they assisted with an eviction in September this year.

PC Mares was engulfed by flames and sustained severe burns to his legs and hand and is still recovering from the attack.

PC Lenton grabbed his colleague, pulled him away from the fire and rolled him in long grass to extinguish the flames.

He removed burnt clothing from PC Mares by handcuffing Hadjigueorguiev, who had been restrained by two bailiffs at the scene.

In a statement issued through Devon and Cornwall Police, PC Mares said his recovery was still ongoing and his priority was to return to “full physical fitness”.
