Devon and Cornwall police are warning dog owners about a new ploy after incidents in Kent.
Dog thieves are using fake RSPCA stickers on a white van to target dog owners, claiming their animal matches a description of a stolen dog, according to the statement posted on social media.
Police claim are warning people never to allow their pet to be taken as legitimate RSPCA offcers will always carry ID which can be used to identify them and would not remove the animals from their owners in this way.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police has said: "We have been made aware by colleagues in Kent that there is a new ploy being undertaken by dog thieves.
"RSPCA officers will have valid ID and if in any doubt call the head office on 03001234999.
"Please also inform police on 101 with as much detail as possible such as vehicle registration etc."
According to a Freedom of Information Request by Dogs Trust, over 100 dogs were stolen in Devon and Cornwall in 2018 alone.
