A new community larder is being set up in helston with the aim of tackling food waste and bringing down local carbon emissions.

Helston Community Larder, which has been organised by Helston Action Group member, Katharine Lewis, is being set up in order to reduce the amount of food waste produced locally as well as to reduce carbon emissions and give local people access to good nutritious food that would otherwise be thrown away.

Alongside another community volunteer, Katharine has been organising venues, procuring funding and getting the paperwork sorted in order to be able to set up the community larder.

Katharine said: "I am so pleased that Helston will soon be joining other towns in hosting a community larder.

"This is a really good way of tackling food waste locally, distributing food from supermarkets and other local businesses that is perfectly good to eat, but would otherwise be thrown away.

"We will soon be putting out a call for volunteers, so do get in touch if you would like to get involved!"

Alongside Katharine in setting up the scheme is community volunteer, Cheryl Richardson, who said: "Over the years there is so much waste from supermarkets, and I see people struggling with feeding their families having to chose between rent, bills or the parent or person having to miss meals so why not put it to great use help people to try and get back on their feet."

A venue is yet to be secured for the project and the start date of the scheme will follow shortly after once this has been attained.

Of that wasted food, 70% is estimated to have been edible and the total cost to households works out to between £250-£400 per year.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reports that food waste is responsible for around eight percent of Human-made greenhouse emissions and that nearly 30 percent of all available agricultural land on Earth is used for food which is eventually left uneaten or discarded as waste.
