DESPITE being given an order to leave by 10am today, travellers are still camped in the shadow of Pendennis Castle, with more appearing to have arrived.

This afternoon when the Packet went up the 'Hornworks' site, an area of green space between the Ships and Castles car park and Pendennis Castle, to see if it had been cleared, more vehicles were arriving and we were told where to go in no uncertain terms.

Yesterday, Cornwall Council issued an Order To Leave to those were already on the site  by 10am today, but it appears to have been ignored.

Falmouth Packet:

In a statement issued to the Packet yesterday, Cornwall Council said: “A Direction to Leave has been served on the group, requiring them to vacate the site by 10am on Wednesday (July 7).

"Plans were already in place to install boulders at the site, and this will progress once the area is clear."

Falmouth Packet:

The county council had been criticised for not installing boulders at the site after complaints about anti-social behaviour there last year.

Travellers with caravans set up camp on land near Ships and Castles

On Monday council officers and the police went up to the site to assess the medical and educational needs of the people on the site which is owned by Cornwall Council and leased out to English Heritage for major events.

Falmouth Packet:

The travellers arrived on site at the weekend, with three caravans. Today there appeared to be five caravans/mobile homes and more vehicles.

Children were playing in the earthwork mounds and we were told we weren't allowed to take pictures, despite it being a public space.

As we were there, another vehicle drove onto the site. It is not known what the next move will be, but we will contact Cornwall Council for an update
