Two people were left trapped underneath granite boulders this afternoon after they fell in west Cornwall.

Fire crews, the ambulance service and Cornwall Air Ambulance were scrambled to the Madron area just before 4.15pm.

It followed reports that large granite boulders had fallen on top of two people.

The South Western Ambulance Service put in a call to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service's Critical Control room, asking for helping in removing the boulders from the casualties.

Crews from St Just, Tolvaddon and Penzance fire service supported by a flexi duty officer attended, along with Station Manager Martyn Addinall, supporting Tolvaddon Community Fire Station and Phoenix Services.

A fire service spokesperson said: "Critical control received a call from ambulance requesting our attendance to assist their crews in removing large granite boulders that had fallen on top of two persons.

"Crews used crash rescue and specialist lifting equipment to release the persons."

Once released the pair were handed over to the ambulance service.

Cornwall Air Ambulance was also called, but it is not thought that they were needed in the event.
