Is Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon filming at Kynance in Cornwall?

Speculation is rife this weekend that filming for the lavish TV series has returned to Cornwall after a number of medieval style props were spotted on the Lizard Peninsula beach yesterday (Friday).

Photos were posted to the 'Cornwall_in_Focus' Facebook page, showing an array of different swords, shields and other weaponry, as well as barrels, wooden crates and Hessian sacks laid out on the cliffs above one of Cornwall's most popular beauty spots.

Earlier this year, back in April, former Doctor Who star Matt Smith was among the actors photographed at Holywell Bay, one of the confirmed locations for the filming of the new series that is based on George RR Martin’s book Fire & Blood.

The series will tell the story of House Targaryen, from which Daenerys Targaryen of the original show came from, and will take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

It is not clear if the props found at Kynance are connected to this filming – but many people locally have reached this conclusion.

The author behind the Cornwall_in_Focus page wrote: "Looks like they’re back to filming Game of Thrones again. This time down Kynance Cove.

"I was lucky enough to be able to walk right through the set today, although I suspect it’ll be closed off to the public very soon, but was amazing to see the props up close, the detail that goes into these kinds of things is insane."

In April filming for House of the Dragon also took place on St Michael's Mount, where crew tents and scaffolding were put up, and photos emerged of a stone archway showing a logo of the House Velaryon, although no actors were spotted there.

At the time, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service put out a warning to expect to see "controlled plumes of smoke" coming from the south side of the island.

Signs first emerged that Cornwall had been chosen among the filming locations after a Warner Bros lorry was seen in Newquay.

Warner Bros is owned by WarnerMedia, which is also the parent company to HBO and CNN.

House of the Dragon is being filmed for American TV channel HBO and it has already been confirmed the ten-episode series, due to air in 2022, will also be available to viewers in the UK also on Sky Atlantic, as well as on NOW.

Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne. He is described in the pre-show press for the series as "a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon."

With him on the beach at Holywell Bay back in April was Emma D'Arcy, whose previous work includes the TV series Truth Seekers alongside Nick Frost. She plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child. She is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragonrider.

They could both be seen with very pale blonde hair and thick overcoats as they laughed and joked during a break in filming.
