Another blow to Helston town centre has been confirmed today with the news that Barclays is to close early next year.

The branch is to close its doors for the last time on Wednesday, February 9.

The next nearest Barclays branches are Camborne and Falmouth.

Customers were informed of the closure in a letter, which also set out alternative banking options, including online banking and the Barclays app.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking. As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at the Helston branch, where there has been a 15% reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020. In addition, eight out of ten (82%) of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”

The bank has said that it does not intend to make anyone redundant as a result of the closure, with staff in the Helston branch to be offered alternative roles in the company.

It has added that customers will still be able to use the Barclays app, telephone banking, online banking and video banking.

Everyday transactions can be completed at the Post Office, including at the Coinagehall Street branch in Helston.

Staff in branch will able to offer advice and support to customers over any concerns.

The bank said that the Barclays Van would operate in the area and it will be offering virtual ‘tea and teach’ sessions for customers looking for more detail on digital banking and other alternatives to branch-based banking.

It will leave just one bank left in Helston town centre, Lloyds Bank.
