A petition has been made in an effort to save a race track in Cornwall.

United Downs Raceway, which hosted Stock Car racing near Camborne was forced to close on October 31 2021.

The Packet reported that the first stage of planning permission had been granted to build the UK’s first geothermal rum distillery and cask maturation research facility directly connected into the first deep geothermal power plant on the site in United Downs in May 2021.

A petition has been made in order to save the racetrack in order to preserve the history, and the future of Stock Car Racing in Cornwall.

As of writing the petition still requires over 4,000 signatures to reach its desired 15,000 target. You can view the petition here.

A statement on the raceway's petition page read: "After more than sixty years of Stock Car racing in Cornwall, the county will no longer have a circuit. Cornwall has been the breeding ground for Stock Car World Champions such as Johnny Marquand, Dave Brown, Colin Higman and Billy Batten. Former Banger World Champion Dave Spooner.

"It is going to be replaced by a rum cask maturation biome, geothermal energy centre; visitor centre including ancillary shop and café, and a bar. This is the first phase of a process which aims to progress on to a distillery and further development of the site in the years ahead."

"Friends and family in the short oval racing circuit community - make your voice heard. By signing this petition, you are supporting the stance that the United Downs Raceway must remain a venue for motor sports."
