THE site of Falmouth’s former Labour club is to be turned into flats after plans were approved by Cornwall Council.

The development proposal is for the first and second floors of the building in Webber Hill, which currently act as manager’s accommodation for Jago’s Bar, with direct staircase access down to the bar area.

Cornwall Council planning department approved the application today (Tuesday).

The proposed use will involve the removal of the direct link between the bar and the upper accommodation by taking away a staircase.

The approval means the first floor and second floor will be converted to two self-contained flats with their own independent external access from Webber Hill along and up an existing access ramp to the north western elevation of the property leading to an existing external door where a shared entrance lobby will be formed.

As reported this week, Falmouth Town Council’s planning committee members also gave the thumbs up to the application to develop the former club above Jago’s Bar on Webber Hill.

The building used to be the Labour club and was last used after the election of MP Candy Atherton in 2001.

Falmouth Civic Society has already said there is “little reason” to oppose the application as the changes to the exterior are minor, and in keeping, and the impact on the Conservation Area and Listed Building are minimal.
