An army of volunteers is about to descend upon the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge to transform its spacious Exhibition Halls into the floral fiesta that is the Cornwall Garden Society’s 2022 Spring Flower Show.

Sponsored by Atkins Ferrie Wealth Management, this major highlight of the horticultural year makes a welcome return to the prestigious county venue on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April, following a two-year, Covid-19-related hiatus.

Carpenters, drapers, landscape designers, horticultural experts, floral artists and the Show Committee are all working together to create an oasis of spring that will impress visitors with vibrant colour and celebrate the season on an exuberant scale.

The Competitive Classes are at the heart of the Show with more than 170 categories for ornamental trees and shrubs; magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and daffodils; herbaceous, rhizomatous and bulbous species, pot plants and alpines, as well as floral art and children’s entries.

There is something for everyone from experienced head gardener to green-fingered enthusiast alike.

“The excitement is building as our incredible team of volunteers rises to the challenge of creating a worthy showcase for the Duchy’s best blooms and fantastic flora,” comments Show Director, Dickie Trant. “Towards the end of next week, we will welcome competitors with hundreds of horticultural entries as well as the arrival of 95 high-quality nurseries and garden-related trade stands to the Plant Pavilion, Environmental Emporium and Horticultural Heaven; local producers of delicious food and drink, and a curated selection of Cornish creatives to our Artisan Area to create a festival of flowers and fun for family and friends.”

In the Children’s Competitive Classes, artistic displays of marine-salvaged plastic in boxes planted with flowers, created by local schools with the help of Perennial Harvest, will highlight the threat that plastic waste poses for our precious coastline. The gardeners of the future will be able to learn from these exhibits and enjoy immersive story-telling from Laura Salmon of The Story Garden.

“If you are passionate about plants, our horticultural shopping experience will offer quality and choice, all under one roof,” explains Trade Co-ordinator, Sue Newton. “With more than 40 nurseries from Cornwall, the south west and the wider UK, including RHS Chelsea Gold Medal-winning Master Growers and National Collections®, and traders offering everything from furniture to firepits, garden forks to glass art and secateurs to sculpture, you name it and you’ll be able to buy it!”

There will also be an informative line-up of talks and demonstrations throughout the Show weekend from the National Wildflower Centre, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and R & A Scamp Quality Daffodils to name but a few. At Gardeners’ Question Time on Saturday and Sunday, visitors can seek advice and gain knowledge from leading horticultural experts and BBC Radio Cornwall gardening specialists.

Discounted memberships for the Cornwall Garden Society will be available from the CGS Hub.
