A new gig boat constructed by Cornish boatbuilder Louis Hunkin of Hunkin and Sons Fowey is to be launched this Saturday, April 2.
Hunkin and Sons Fowey has been building boats since 1912 and their latest model, a Pilot Gig named the 'Arrow' will take to the seas from the Inner Harbour, Padstow at 5:30 pm. The club voted to name the vessel 'Arrow' as a nod to the heritage of a local boat used on the River Camel in the mid-1800s.
Before hitting the water the gig will receive a blessing from Reverend Ian Gulland of Padstow Parish and christened by Caroline White, wife of Major Hugo White MBE the longest standing member of the club.
Club Chairman Sean Alcock, of Padstow, said: "We have worked very hard to fundraise for this boat with the help of the local community, and with a generous anonymous donation we were able to purchase her for the club.
"Arrow will allow us to be more competitive and grow the club so that even more people, of all ages and abilities, can join in this exciting and unique sport. We are proud to keep the heritage of Pilot Gigs alive.
The club has invited the local community to the event from 5.30-8 pm and hopes to encourage new members to join.
