Although the performance might not have been to their usual high standards, Falmouth Town Manager Andrew Westgarth was naturally delighted after securing the Cornwall Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Wendron United.
1298 spectators crammed into Poltair Park to see Jack Bray-Evans score the only goal of the game as Town sealed the domestic double after winning the South West Peninsula League Premier West with a win over rivals Penryn Athletic on Good Friday.
Analysing the match Westgarth said: "The game itself was probably the worst I have seen us play all season, we couldn't get going, we started the game so poor. Wendron hit the bar after a couple of minutes. Kian (Thomas) had a massive chance he will be disappointed with that. We could have found ourselves two or three down.
"That man Jack Bray-Evans, that's what we brought him to the football club for. The big games and that one bit of magic. He scored from quite an acute angle. Overall I am absolutely delighted to win the double, to win the Senior Cup for the second time.
"No one is going to look back in ten or 15 years and remember the game. They are going to remember the winners and the title."
First-team regulars returned after being rested for the Penryn fixture as the Manager was once again able to call on the talented depths of his squad to produce the desired results.
"We had to make some tough decisions today, some really tough decisions." The Manager began. "We had to make a big call on Friday with one eye on today. A manager is judged on recruitment and making big decisions.
"I am sure there were a few eyebrows raised when we did what we did on Friday and like I said we had to leave a couple of boys out today which was hard to do.
"Any manager who has been to a cup final will know how difficult it has been for us to do that, no one can say anything. We won 1-0 and got a clean sheet so, overall you couldn't have asked for a better weekend if you tried."
Town have now won the trophy on back-to-back occasions after James Ward scored the winner for Town in a 2-1 win over Saltash United back in 2019. The centre back was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet in this final but nonetheless produced a resolute man of the match performance at centre back to help Town keep a clean sheet.
Praising his Captain Westgarth said: "He was absolutely brilliant, Wardy has had an unbelievable season not just today. I think all the boys at some point have played a massive part. You can list the games off, they're endless.
"Every single player should be proud of their efforts this year and to do what we have done. We have been so consistent and today almost feels like the icing on the cake."
The Manager did admit he was slightly frustrated by his side's showing on the big occasion but didn't want to be too harsh on his team considering the magnitude of the achievement: "We have a good squad, we have some good players that is the frustration from my side of things. I thought we just didn't compose ourselves in the game. After the first 15/20 minutes Wendron sort of died off then.
"In the second half, they didn't offer a lot. I can't think Barnesy touched the ball second half. There wasn't a lot of quality from either side.
"We had a few breakaway chances, we had a lot of corners. Overall, we deserved to win the game minus that first five minutes. It is hard to be too critical of the boys. It has been an unbelievable season to do what we have done and I can't wait now to go and celebrate."
The match was well attended by the as ever vocal F Troop and Town was full of praise for his travelling fans highlighting one fan in particular. He said: "The league was the main thing, that was the target from day one.
"That was for them (the F-Troop) today. Johnny Perrow, organising all those busses, that in itself is a task organising 300 people on a bus from Falmouth to here. Once they've had a few ales they're all oiled up.
"Just to see the colour, I was just a bit gutted we didn't score in front of them (at that end) I get it is a bit critical. It is a colossal effort and one I am immensely proud of, on and off the field."
Town are next in action at home to Newquay on Saturday, April 23.
