A TRURO woman who admitted to assaulting a 63 year old woman, including dragging her down stairs and smashing a picture over her head, has been sentenced at a court in Cornwall today.

Danielle Elizabeth May Allen, 32, of Wicket Way, Blackwater, Truro pleaded guilty to assault at the first opportunity and appeared at Truro Crown Court today (April 19) for sentencing.

The court heard how Allen had been staying with the victim at an address in St Blazey over the Christmas period back in 2020.

On December 29, Allen had been drinking and told the victim she would be phoning her on-off partner, which would have put her in breach of a previous domestic violence order.

The victim then refused to let Allen use the phone, telling her she would be in breach of the order.

At this point, the court heard how Allen then became aggressive and raised her fist to punch the victim.

After calling the police, the victim was told to move away from Allen and that officers would be assigned to the call.

Allen then began shouting at the victim, telling her she "wanted her to die."

The victim then went upstairs but was followed by Allen who took the phone out of her hand.

She then punched the victim in the face and dragged her down the stairs before taking a picture from the wall and smashing it over her head.

After further punching the victim and keeping her knee on her chest, the assault was eventually brought to an end by police officers arriving.

Upon the arrival of the police, Allen ran into a garage at the property where she was found and arrested.

Allen had two previous convictions for battery involving the same victim and the court was told she had suffered with alcohol and emotional issues.

During the sentencing, Judge Stephen Carr noted how Allen's alcohol use, if not addressed, would eventually kill her.

He said: "You're an alcoholic and you will be for the rest of your life.

"You have got maybe a year or two left.

"You won't still be drinking when you're 35 because you will be dead."

Allen was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment, suspended for two years and was also made the subject of a 12 month community order and will need to complete 20 days rehabilitation activities as well as mental health treatment.

She will also be subject to a restraining order, banning any contact with the victim.
