A lone yachtsman had to be rescued by The Lizard lifeboat last night during a routine exercise after becoming confused as to where he was.

During the exercise the RNLB Rose noticed the 23ft yacht in a position just West of Black Head, South of Coverack.

When they contacted the yachtsman as to why he was out there it became clear that he was lost and was trying to get to Falmouth.

The lifeboat followed the yacht to get him back on course but as the journey progressed it became clear the yachtsman needed help on board his vessel.

A lifeboat crew member was put on board and a tow rope was attached to take him to Falmouth where the Falmouth lifeboat was launched to take over the tow.

Posting on its Facebook page The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station said: "During last night’s routine exercise launch, RNLB Rose and her crew were aware of a 23ft yacht in a position just West of Black Head, South of Coverack.

"To get back on course the lifeboat followed the yacht until it was ascertained that the casualty was in need of some assistance on board his vessel. A lifeboat crew member went aboard the yacht and a tow rope was attached to complete the passage to Falmouth.

"Our colleagues at Falmouth RNLI launched to take over the tow North East of the Manacle Bell, Falmouth. Having launched at 6.30pm, RNLB Rose arrived back at the station shortly before 11.30pm."
