FLORA Day is fast approaching and for one Helston man it will be his 74th year performing on the day, with Helston Town Band.

Former postal officer Russell Harvey, who lives in Helston, has been involved with the band for over 70 years.

In 2014 he was rewarded with certificates and has received medals from the chairman of Cornwall Brass Band Association, as well as a special award of recognition from Brass Bands England.

For the Harvey family, Helston Town Band has become part of their life. Their son, Ian, is also a lifelong member and was principal cornet for over 30 years, whilst his brother Malcolm is a former player. Russell’s brother, John, was a loyal band member for 40 years.

Although Russell is a big fan of Flora Day, especially the start of the day at 7am for the Morning Dance, he has only danced once, as his love has always been playing in the band. He said: "The seven o'clock dance means everything."

Russell will be joining the rest of Helston Town Band for the children's dance, which starts at 9.40am.

This year will also be a very special year for Russell and his family, as his great granddaughter Olivia will be dancing for the first time for Parc Eglos.

Siobhan Benney, granddaughter of Russell and mum to Olivia, and a cardiac nurse at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: "I am so proud to have a well known grandfather, who has taken part in so many Flora Days over the years. Flora Day means a lot for our family."

Daughter in law Karen Harvey added: "I am so proud of Russell performing, and also my granddaughter dancing for the first time, it's going to be such a special day."

As the day gets closer, Russell is particularly excited as, "it's the only time I am allowed to leave the house," he joked.
