Three Cornish businesses have been honoured by the Queen with awards.
Origin Coffee in Porthleven, Ward Williams Associates LLP in Truro and RouteNote Ltd, also in Truro, are among 232 businesses from across the UK recognised by the Queen on her birthday as being among the best in the country, with the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise.
Winners’ awards are valid for five years. Winners are permitted to fly The Queen’s Awards flag at their main office and use the emblem on their marketing materials. They are also given a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy.
Small Business Minister Paul Scully said: “Companies like Origin Coffee are outstanding examples of the entrepreneurial spirit this country is renowned for, providing not only delicious coffee but the peace of mind that it’s being sourced environmentally and socially sustainably.
“I congratulate all of this year’s winners for their hard work and commitment to producing innovative products and services and wish them every success in their future endeavours.”
Origin Coffee was established in Helston by chief executive Tom Sobey in 2005. It is now based at The Roastery in Porthleven, and owns and operates seven cafes, as well supplying coffee wholesale to more 500 customers across the UK and Europe.
It achieved B-Corp certification in 2020 and has now been recognised in the Sustainable Development category.
Last year Origin roasted 264 tonnes of coffee, spending more than £1.6million with coffee producers in Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Peru, with whom it has long term and direct relationships, including annual visits which encourage social development and reduction in environmental impact.
The awards panel said: "The company has delivered many other positive impacts, including incorporating ‘Circular Economy’ principles into all aspects of the business.
"Staff engagement ranges from monthly beach cleans to tree planting. Origin Coffee is awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because it clearly shows sector leadership and an exemplary approach in its partnership with its producers."
Also receiving a Sustainable Development award is Ward Williams Associates LLP, based at Truro Business Park.
The firm started trading in 1974 and now has seven offices in Truro, Plymouth, Exeter, Salisbury, Gloucester, Manchester, and London, employing 107 people.
Under the eye of chief executive Andrew Snapes, it now sees turnover of £8.1million.
The company is a professional consultancy partnership (LLP) that provides project management, quantity surveying, and building surveying services to clients in both the public and private sectors.
The company is a certified B-Corp and has won a number of construction and sustainability awards. It has plans to be net zero and was described as being "focussed on future and continuous improvement."
The panel said: "Ward Williams is awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development because it has examined and addressed its own impacts and provides leadership for the industry."
