A school in Cornwall has been commended at a national awards ceremony for its sixth form.

Truro School has been recognised at the Muddy Stiletto’s Best Schools Awards 2022 and was 'Highly Commended' in the ‘Special Sixth Form’ category.

The national award looks to recognise the work that has gone on to create a truly unique offering for Sixth Formers at Truro School.

Head and Deputy Head of Sixth Form at Truro School, Mr Ross Williamson and Mrs Lucy Jupp, explain what sets Truro School apart from other A-Level providers.

"Truro School offers Sixth Formers the best of both worlds – being treated in many ways like an adult, whilst also having the support network surrounding a school student.

"Sixth Formers really are in the driving seat, but we are there to help them navigate and avoid the pitfalls.

"We give them a steer when they need it.

"What makes our Sixth Form special is a mood and an attitude, not just a list of things to check off on paper; we give them a whole platform of opportunities," explains Mr Williamson.

Mrs Jupp said: "We are supported on so many sides by our Heads of Departments, our fantastic tutor teams and staff, the medical centre, the Rev and the pastoral team.

"The wide array of curricular and supra curricular activities we offer allows them to be experts if they wish or generalists if they would rather.

"We also know that not everyone is suited to university and that it is very much their future they need to make their decisions."

Mr Williamson added: "Getting into the university of your choice, being offered the right job, or being accepted for an interview isn’t just about great A-Level results.

"It is about a Sixth Form journey that leads to references that evidence relevant, wide, and meaningful experiences and knowledge.

"Truro School’s Diploma programme achieves exactly this."

"Our co-educational Sixth Form is special in that it is large enough to have a diverse pupil group in terms of interests, skills, ambitions, backgrounds and beliefs, but small enough for it to feel like a cohesive community.

"Our students mix and collaborate widely through co-curricular activities which help foster positive peer relationships.

"The students embrace their freedoms to move in many different circles.

"New Sixth Formers have a real impact and help the Sixth Form to feel like a fresh and empowering start for all, including those who have been with us since Prep.

Head of Truro School, Andy Johnson said of the award: "We are delighted to have our ever more dynamic and empowering Sixth Form recognised by this national award.

"It is a credit to the values and ambition showed by the students who are the heart of our School, and the dedicated and creative staff who inspire and serve them through the Diploma programme and beyond.

"It is a privilege to lead a School that empowers talented and courageous young adults to be and to become the very best of themselves."
