A THEATRE in Cornwall has launched its own 'friends' scheme to support local music and performing arts.

Penzance theatre, The Acorn, have launched a new ‘Friends of The Acorn’ scheme today which is already being supported by local people.

The new scheme is a way to become more connected to this local music and performing arts venue, whilst supporting it to become stronger and more resilient.

Theatre Manager, Richard Cawley said: "As a charity, the pandemic has been a difficult time for us over the last two years.

"We’re now looking to the future and have revamped our Friends scheme.

"It gives our supporters, who love the shows we put on, a way to regularly support us and become part of The Acorn family."

Annie Brown, from Redruth, has signed up and is looking forward to her next visit: "I’ve enjoyed lots of shows and performances at The Acorn over the years, so joining as a Friend to give something back felt the right thing to do.

"Music and the arts have suffered during Covid and so have we.

"I’ve really missed being able to enjoy a band or a watch a play, it’s what keeps me sane!

"I am delighted to do my bit to support The Acorn to recover from the effects of the pandemic, and can’t wait to return for a night out."

Through an annual donation, every 'Friend' enables The Acorn to support the local community, whether that’s through offering discounted theatre space hire to local groups, or providing bursaries

for children and young people to take part in community classes held at The Acorn.

Sue Rushforth from Newlyn said: "I’m really pleased to be able to support the Acorn by becoming a Friend.

"There are so many ways the community use the venue such as the Acorn Aerial Circus with Cirque du Ciel which supports young people to develop their skills, the Friday Penzance Town Market or fundraising nights which support local charities.

"I’m just happy to help see this all continue into the future – as well as enjoying some great live music!"

Friends will also receive benefits when they join such as direct notice when new shows are listed.

There’s also a Friends e-newsletter which will feature sneak previews and behind the scenes information on what’s happening at The Acorn.

The launch of the new Friends of the Acorn scheme has been possible thanks to support by the EU’s ERDF Community Led Local Development (CLLD) fund.
