A fire investigation is being carried out today into the cause of a fire which took hold in a Falmouth restaurant on Events Square Saturday afternoon.
The fire service said "a number" of people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the Ranch Events Square, Falmouth at around 1.40pm, although one of the directors told the Packet that no-one had been hurt or treated for smoke inhalation.
He said there had been a small fire in the chimney in the kitchen but hardly any damage to the restaurant with most of it caused by the fire brigade putting it out.
He said the fire was nowhere near as bad as it looked and damage had been minimal.
There were only four people in the restaurant at the time the fire took hold, two staff and two customers, who evacuated quickly and safely.
"No one was hurt," he said.
He said once the investigation had been completed they hoped to reopen the restaurant within the next couple of weeks.
Cornwall fire service said they received a large number of calls with reports of the fire in the restaurant at around 1.43pm on Saturday with smoke billowing from the top of the building.
Due to the number of calls coming in and reports of large amounts of smoke coming from the building, three appliances were immediately mobilised from Falmouth and Truro. In total 30 calls were made.
The first unit that arrived immediately called for back-up as smoke was issuing from the building. The area at the time was packed with people celebrating Falmouth Pride.
On arrival firefighters from Falmouth found a fire in a kitchen and entered using breathing apparatus and hose reels. Further assistance was required and a "make pumps 4 and aerial ladder platform" message was arrived from Tolvaddon and Truro.
Crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels and ladders to fight and extinguish the fire which spread into the neighbouring property. A fire investigation will take place today (Sunday).
Ambulance crews had to treat several people for smoke inhalation at the scene.
A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire Service said: "The Critical Control Centre began receiving multiple emergency calls at 13:43 with reports of a fire in a building in Events Square, Falmouth.
"Due to the number of calls coming in and reports of large amounts of smoke coming from the building, three appliances were immediately mobilised from Falmouth and Truro. At this time, a whole time officer was also mobilised for support.
"On arrival, the first appliance in attendance issued a “make pumps 4 – smoke issuing” message.
"Following this, a further appliance from Tolvaddon was mobilised to the incident. In addition to this, a second Whole Time Officer and an Incident Command Unit from St Just were mobilised.
