A 19-year-old from Helston has returned from the Commonwealth Championships in Birmingham, after winning a silver medal for England.
Joseph Hibbert has returned to Cornwall after his recent achievement at The Commonwealth Esports Championships, which is an international event held between national teams during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The event is spread between three games, eFootball, DOTA 2, and Rocket League, which is the game Joseph competed in to bring home second place, and the silver medal.
Rocket League was released in 2014 and is described as 'football, but with rocket-powered cars'. Rocket League has up to eight players assigned to each of the two teams, using rocket-powered vehicles to hit a ball into their opponent's goal and score points over the course of a match.
The game includes single-player and multiplayer modes that can be played locally and online, including cross-platform play between all versions.
The Commonwealth Esports Championships featured esports athletes from across the Commonwealth. According to Commonwealth Games site, the aim is to "deliver the vision of the Commonwealth Sports Movement: to build peaceful, sustainable, and prosperous communities globally by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through Sport."
Joseph has been an active member of the gaming website Liquipedia since 2019 and has so far won more than £20,000. He has competed various times since he started three years ago, against different players around the world.
Jamie Hibbert, Joseph's dad said: "Joe has had support from his entire family throughout his career, watching him progress through the ranks and on stage.
"We are all delighted for him and support him every step of the way. Joe's future in Rocket League is bright and exciting and we cannot wait to see how it unfolds."
