A circus that tours Cornwall every year has thanked the public for its support after a serious incident at one of its shows earlier in the summer – and announced new performers for the final act.
As previously reported in the Packet, Circus Funtasia, which has recently performed at Helston, Pool and is currently in Bude, had to remove one of its popular acts for a few weeks, due to a serious incident in Exmouth, shortly before it arrived in Cornwall.
This saw one of the bikers, Ivan, who usually takes part in the motorbike 'cage' act called the Globe of Death, being taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. His injuries were described at the time as not life-threatening.
Now that Ivan is said to be on the verge of making a full recovery, the circus has announced there will be new bikers from Bulgaria and Brazil who will be performing in future shows.
Antonio Candela, who also performs in the circus, told the Packet: "Luckily Ivan is in great health and on the verge of a full recovery.
"We would like to wish all of our customers for their continued support and allow us the time to get the Globe of Death back up and running.
"We have searched high and low all over the globe to bring in some of the best riders from Brazil and Bulgaria and they are here to perform in Cornwall for the summer season.
"We want to thank the people of Cornwall for your continued support and hundreds of messages to check on Ivan.
"He will be back in the circus ring in no time."
The Globe of Death involves three bikers who enter the a cage one by one, to ride around it. Eventually, all three of the riders are in there at the same time carefully riding around one another.
Due to the cancellation of the act, an alternative laser light show replaced the biker’s grand finale.
Despite the missing motorbikes, the show has still received reviews since its opening night.
The circus will be in Bude up until September 4.
