A puppy named Kernow who was named and paid for by The Martin Jennings Memorial Motorcycle is doing well with his training.
Last year, the bikers raised over £11,000 for Guide Dogs to put a puppy through training to its qualification as a guide dog. Kernow was born on December 16, 2021.
Puppy raiser Carol has been looking after Kernow since February, and, as previously reported in the Packet, Carol said: "Kernow is a bright, happy little character, who is very playful and loves his cuddles! He has settled in quickly to his new home and is now sleeping right through the night.
"During his first week, Kernow woke a few times in the night because he needed the toilet, but he now sleeps right though – he wakes very early each day and immediately thinks it’s playtime!
"One of the first things pups need to master when they move to their new home is toilet training. Kernow has been brilliant, and after a few accidents on his first day, he is now clean and dry indoors."
Now, that Kernow has nearly completed his first year of training, the next step will be heading to a Guide Dog's training school to begin his next stage of training.
Kernow's report card shows that he is doing well in obedience and puppy care, but still needs to improve on his social skills. In the comments, it said: "He loves free running and mixes well with other dogs he meets.
He likes to play retrieve and tug games with his Puppy Raiser.
On occasions, Kernow can be vocal and bark when someone is at the front door of his home or if he hears people walking by, so we are working on discouraging this behaviour. Kernow regularly attends puppy class which he enjoys, and always tries his hardest to please his Puppy Raiser. He is in the adolescent phase now so at times can appear to ignore his handler if there is something better going on, but on the whole, he is a lovely, sweet-natured boy."
The Martin Jennings Memorial Motorcycle Run first started in 1988 and has raised approximately £150,000 for local and national charities over the years. This year, they will be raising funds for Cornwall Hospice Care.
