A woman has died after getting into difficulties at a Cornish beach.
Emergency services were called to Perranporth at around 4pm yesterday (Thursday).
HM Coastguard had received a 999 call from a member of the public, believed to be the mother of those involved, to say two people were in difficulty in the water at Droskyn, just along from the main beach.
RNLI lifeguards from Perranporth and the coastguard rescue team from St Agnes were sent to help, with both the coastguard helicopter from Newquay and Cornwall Air Ambulance scrambled.
South West Ambulance Service and Devon and Cornwall Police were also sent to the scene.
One person was able to get themselves to shore safely, however a second person had to be recovered from the water by lifeguards.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of emergency services who gave CPR, she was declared to have died at the scene.
A coastguard spokesperson said: "At around 4pm yesterday (August 25) HM Coastguard received a 999-call reporting two people in difficulty in the water at Droskyn, Perranporth.
"RNLI lifeguards from Perranporth and the coastguard rescue team from St Agnes were sent to help, along with the coastguard helicopter from Newquay and the air ambulance. South West Ambulance Service and Devon and Cornwall Police were also sent to assist.
"One person self-recovered to shore. A woman was recovered from the water by lifeguards and CPR was given, but she was declared deceased by a paramedic at the incident."
Speaking to Radio Cornwall, Falmouth Coastguard James Instance said the emergency call had been made by a woman who said her daughter was in difficulty in the sea. He described the conditions at the time as high water and a choppy sea.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were notified at around 5.15pm yesterday, Thursday, August 25, to reports of a concern of welfare of a woman in the water at Perranporth Beach.
"Emergency services, including the RNLI and coastguard rescue teams, along with the air ambulance, were all present at the scene.
"The woman was pulled out of the water by lifeguards but was sadly pronounced deceased a short time after. Next of kin are aware.
"A file will be prepared for the coroner."
