A Royal Marine based at RNAS Culdrose has hit upon a novel way of raising money for charity – hauling a fridge up Wales’ highest peaks.

Corporal Sam Hammond, a weapons’ instructor at the Helston naval base, hopes to complete the 17 miles – with 2,200-metres in elevation – to raise money for Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team.

The 29-year-old, who lives in Redruth, said: “I will be tackling the three highest Welsh peaks as fast as possible this autumn.

“I don’t plan to simply walk up and down alone. I will be carrying a fridge weighing more than 60lbs on my back. Completing all three mountains with a fridge like this has never been done before."

There is one bonus, however, with Corporal Hammond joking: “Actually, because it’s well insulated, my fridge is perfect for keeping my lunch and water bottle chilled!”

He will take on Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons before scaling Cadair Idris in mid-Wales with the finale at Snowdon.

“I have a passion for pretty much everything outdoors and Snowdonia is one of my favourite places in the world,” he added.

“Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team is made up of volunteers who give up their time to keep us safe. They work 365 24/7 to provide us with the security and assistance we need so any donation will help.”

The exact date of the event depends on the weather but will be either at the end of September or in October.

Last month, for training, Corporal Hammond completed a punishing five-kilometre ‘fun-run’ at Heartlands in Pool with his fridge strapped to his back.
