There was a sombre feeling in town this morning as schools, shops and businesses paid their respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
After the sad news the Queen had passed away yesterday, Helston is paying its respects with shop closures, window displays, and a tribute service at the Central Methodist Church on Sunday.
Charity shops including Your Voice, British Heart Foundation, and Fishermen's Mission are all closed today as a mark of respect, with all three displaying a tribute to the Queen.
Her Majesty was the patron of the charity, and shop owner Melinda King wanted to pay her respects.
"I didn't feel it was right to open the shop today, but I wanted to pay our respects by doing a window display.
"I haven't stopped welling up since the news broke yesterday," Melinda said.
Bowdens Hardware shop also had a subtle display for the Queen in their shop window with a Union Jack flag.
Shop owners, Mark Slater and Jean Slater said: "She's been around all of our lives, so we wanted to pay our respects.
"We feel sorry for her family, she was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she has been constant in everyone's lives."
Cabs4U taxi driver Peter Brimacombe met Her Majesty in the 1980s when he was a part of the Royal Tank Regiment in Germany, saying: "She was an absolutely brilliant, a diamond.
"She had time for everyone."
The Lady Eve Vintage
The Lady Eve Vintage at the top of Meneage Street also wanted to pay its respect with a window display and a Union Jack flag. Owners, Jan and Bee told the Packet: "It's an end of an era, she was dedicated and kept her promise right until the end."
Miller Country Wide Estate Agents has removed its houses for sale adverts in the window and has displayed a tribute to the Queen instead. Craig Hogg, an Estate Agent and Senior Lister of the business, said: "It's very hard-hitting for the whole of the world." The business has decided no marketing today, as a sign of respect.
This afternoon at midday the bell ringers at St Michaels's Church rang a half muffled peal of call changes as per the Central Bell.
Central Methodist Church is holding a service for the Queen on Sunday, September 11 at 10.45am and floral tributes can be left at the chapel.
There will be a book of condolence for Her Majesty at the Guildhall from Monday, September 12.
