A TEAM of ladies from Cornwall competed in an won two separate rowing events last week.
On Monday, September 10, Issey Barnes, Ellie Dash, Bennath Halse, Sarah Lewis and Beth Wills from Greenbank Falmouth Rowing Club, with support from Club Captain James Kerr, competed and won both the Junior and Senior Ladies Championship events at the South Coast Rowing Championships, held in Paignton.
The South Coast Championship is an invitation only event, following on from season wins in the West of England Amateur Rowing Association (WEARA) Regattas.
The six championship events ran alongside open races in one of the largest single day Regattas in the country, attended by over 40 clubs stretching from Cornwall to Kent.
This winning day was exceptional for the club, with other clubs fielding multiple crews of seasoned coastal rowers.
Greenbank put forward five ladies to compete across both ladies Championship events, with Sarah Lewis coxing the Junior event, switching with Beth Wills to cox the Senior event.
Stithians Lake provides a windy training ground, but the ladies needed to quickly learn and adapt technique to get the most out of the boat and crew.
This crew formed at the beginning on the WEARA Regatta season, starting off in Novice 4’s, quickly progressing to Senior C’s and competing in Senior A’s.
Now champions of both WEARA and South Coast Championships there is a bright future ahead of these ladies, looking to compete at national level in upcoming seasons.
