The alternative surf competition Smooth Movers 2022 recently took place at Godrevy, Cornwall, and featured all sorts of fun competitions including men’s and women’s longboard sessions, a twin fin board session and an ‘expression’ session.
Smooth Movers, presented by Sharp’s Offshore Pilsner and supported by Down the Line surf shop, provides local surfers with a different approach to a surf competition – a more community-oriented, laid-back style of competition compared to others.
However, the contest still has the competitive edge which inspired some top-quality performances from those competing in this year’s edition.
The weekend’s festivities kicked off on the Friday at The Red River, Gwithian, with exhibitions, surf film screenings and some live music for everyone to enjoy and prepare for the next day of eclectic surfing and music.
The morning featured the heats for the men’s and women’s longboard sessions, the ‘Battered Fish’ twin fin surf session, before lunch and then the ‘Send it for Summer’ expression session.
The sun was shining down on the windswept beach with nice, peaky 2ft surf for the competitors which held up until the finals later in the day.
After the showcase of some of Cornwall’s most talented surfers competing in some of the county’s dreamiest conditions, competitors and spectators alike enjoyed Tuani’s Takeaway with refreshing pints of Offshore Pilsner, a beer born from the same conditions of perfect north coast Cornish surf with offshore wind conditions that were seen during the day at Godrevy.
Finally, Hayle Rugby Club was the venue for Algorthym.SW x Smooth Mover’s post-event party to end what had been an amazing weekend of surf, music and celebration of Cornwall’s heritage of locals connecting with the ocean.
Co-founder of Smooth Movers, Josh Daniel, said: "Smooth Movers is about bringing people together.
"Our aim is always to unite the clans of British surfing and we clearly managed to do that this year.
"It is grassroots events like this that remind everyone why putting the effort in to bring people together is so important and I think we really showed what it meant to everyone to finally be back together having fun again."
James Nicholls, Marketing Controller for Sharp’s Brewery, said: "We love supporting events like Smooth Movers, which celebrate Cornish surf culture brilliantly.
"The level of surfing and amount of fun that was had in the water was infectious to all the spectators and it is clear that everyone had an amazing time during the weekend.
"Josh and the rest of the crew clearly put a lot of effort into the event, and it was reflected in how smoothly it all went."
The event was sponsored by Sharp’s Brewery’s award-winning Offshore Pilsner, which is available on draught in pubs around the UK and in 330ml cans from Sharp’s Brewery’s online shop.
