Residents in Hayle are being warned to keep their windows and doors shut and to stay inside if they smell smoke.
There is an ongoing incident in the Beatrice Terrace area of the town, near to the Texaco garage, the fire service has said.
It involves rubbish on fire inside a derelict building.
People are being asked to avoid the area to let emergency services work at the scene.
A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said just before 11.50am: “There is currently an ongoing incident in the Beatrice Terrace area of Hayle near the Texaco garage. Please avoid the area.
“If you smell smoke, close windows and doors and stay inside.”
Four fire crews are currently at the scene, using jets to try and put out the flames.
The fire service has given an update to say: “One fire appliance from Hayle, two fire appliances from Tolvaddon and one fire appliance from Penzance are in attendance at a fire involving rubbish inside a derelict building, measuring 20 metres by 20 metres.
“Firefighters are using breathing apparatus and two jets to extinguish the fire.
“The advice to people in the area is to keep windows shut, as there is a significant amount of smoke.”
A furhter update at 3pm read: "Firefighters are making good progress with extinguishing a large amount of rubbish alight within the derelict building.
"A wall has been removed to assist with access to the fire. Machinery is being used to turn over the waste and hosereels are being used to dampen it down. The incident will be ongoing for a few more hours."
Traffic maps shows congestion in Lethlean Lane, adjoining Beatrice Terrace.
It is a heavily residential area that backs onto Hayle Recreation Ground and skate park.
Fortunately it is also just a short distance away from Hayle Community Fire Station also, meaning fire crews were on scene quickly.
Traffic monitoring system INRIX is reporting the road being blocked.
It is reporting: “Beatrice Terrace both ways blocked due to fire services activity from B3301 / Madison Close to Texaco Station. Traffic is coping well. Affecting traffic between Lelant and Hayle.”
The Packet will bring you more updates as to the nature of the incident when more details become available.
