Bonfire Night is just a few weeks away now, and new research has revealed that a location in Cornwall ranks among the best places to watch fireworks displays in the UK.

Research from LotteryCritic.com has revealed that Truro ranks among the 15 best places in the UK for this.

The city came in third on that list, only being beaten out by Uckfield in East Sussex and St David's in Pembrokeshire.

This is based on factors involving light pollution, which are the Bortle scale, SQM reading and artificial brightness, to create a Fireworks Visibility score.

The Bortle scale is a classification system which uses astronomical observations to measure light pollution. The scale runs from 1 (darkest - best for watching fireworks) to 9 (worst- - difficult to watch fireworks).

Meanwhile, SQM (Sky Quality Meter) is an instrument used to give a reading on the luminance of the night sky. A rating of 16.00, is the lowest and therefore the brightest sky. At the other end, 22.00 is the highest and thus the darkest.

Finally, artificial brightness measures sky brightness against natural brightness, which is set at 174 µcd/m2. A rating higher than 3,000 µcd/m2 is known as ‘Very high light intensity’ and at this level the human eye does not need to adapt to the dark to see.

Truro City Council has announced the return of the annual Bonfire and Fireworks
Display at Tremorvah Playing Field, on Friday, November 4.

Gates will open at 5pm and the bonfire will be lit at 6pm, followed by a fireworks display at 6.30pm.

Entry will be charged at £3 per adult and £1 per child (under 16), and refreshments will also be available to purchase on-site. This will be a cash-only event.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Mayor’s chosen charity, The Invictus Trust.

Mayor of Truro Steven Webb said: “I am very much looking forward to the return of the bonfire and fireworks display at Tremorvah Playing Field.

“It is great to be able to offer these events for our community and, as such, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Stephens Scown for their assistance with event volunteers.

“The money raised will go directly to my chosen charity, The Invictus Trust, contributing to the vital work they do for Cornwall’s young people”.
