A top celebrity chef who took over Rick Stein's restaurant in Porthleven has been forced to close it for the 'forseeable future" due to soaring fuel and cost increases.

Michael Caines opened the harbourside restaurant in July 2020 after taking over the site of the former Rick Stein Porthleven restaurant.

The site overlooking the harbour was acquired in the Michael Caines Collection which includes The Cove at Maenporth Beach, Falmouth.

In a statement on Tuesday (October 25) Michael Caines said: "My team and I found real joy and pride in running the Harbourside Refuge for the past two years, even under the most challenging conditions.

"We have had to deal with a rollercoaster of events from after-effects of Brexit to Covid and now the cost of living crisis - challenges that I know many others are facing too, both locally and nationally.

"We have tried immensely hard to deal with these challenges, but I'm sorry to say that we have not be able to fully recover from the ongoing impact in regards to both supply and staff shortages, allied now with the soaring fuel and cost increases.

"It is therefore with a heavy heart that we have chosen to close Harbourside Refuge from November 6 for the foreseeable future as we feel that the business is not sustainable to survive through the winter months to come."

He added: "I would like to take this moment to thank our incredibly hard working team who hosted so many guests with true passion and dedicated to hospitality."

He says that they hope that in closing for the winter months, the Harbourside Refuge will be able to weather the economic storm and that this is not a final goodbye but just a ‘see you soon’!”

Many members of the team will move to the Cove in Maenporth.

At the time of its opening The Cove offered promised to offer a "relaxed dining experience inspired by its sea-side setting", serving found locally - not only in the selection of fresh fish and shellfish, but meat, game, dairy produce, seasonal vegetables and fruit, as well as a selection of drinks sourced from the South West.
