A thief who destroyed 11 bottles of wine belonging to Camborne Tesco and assaulted two police officers has been ordered to undergo mental health treatment.

Mark Liam Chambers, aged 34, of Centenary Street, Camborne, pleaded guilty in September to stealing a bottle of wine worth £5.75 from Tesco Camborne and destroying 11 bottles of wine worth £82.75 from the same store on September 12 this year.

For these two offences Chambers was made the subject of a community order during which he must not drink alcohol for a period 90 days, have mental health treatment for 12 sessions under the supervision of the Probation Service and carry out 60 hours of unpaid community work within the next 12 months.

Chambers' guilty plea was taken into account when imposing sentence.

Chambers had also admitted assaulting PC Jared Sanderson and PC Sarah Gough by beating on September 12 and for these offences he was given the same sentence.

There was no order for compensation because whilst magistrates were of the view Emergency Workers are as entitled to awards of compensation as anyone else they said: "We are of the view these assaults were at the lower end of the scale and it was difficult from the information available to the court to quantify the amount of compensation that was appropriate."
