The Cornwall-Devon border has fully reopened at the Tamar Bridge but queues remain this lunchtime following a ‘police led incident’.
Police shut Lane 1 of the A38 heading westbound at the Tamar Bridge, on the Cornwall to Plymouth border, while emergency services worked at the scene this morning.
Devon and Cornwall Police have now confirmed the nature of the incident, saying that a man had died after falling from the bridge, despite the intervention of emergency services.
A force spokesperson said: “Police were notified at around 10.45am today, Saturday 5 November, to reports of a concern of welfare of a man on Tamar Bridge, Plymouth.
“Emergency services attended the scene and road closures were put in place.
“Further reports state that the man had fallen from the bridge and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“The death is not believed to be suspicious and the man’s next of kin have been informed.
“The incident is not believed to be suspicious and a file for the Coroner will be prepared.”
Lane 1 over the bridge was closed during the incident, but shortly before midday Highways South West confirmed that it had now reopened.
However, it warned: “There is one mile of congestion following this incident so please allow time for these delays to clear.”
