The owners of two "world class" restaurants in Devon are opening up a new venture in Cornwall after taking over a pub in Flushing.
William Speed and Tamara Costin, pictured below, owners of the acclaimed 'beachhouse' and 'schoolhouse' Devon, have announced their recent purchase of The Seven Stars public house.
Having run South Devon based seafood-focussed beachhouse for 13 years and schoolhouse for five years, Tamara and William have collectively built a strong management structure and team across both operations.
They have been on the lookout for the right pub establishment in Cornwall for some time and the Seven Stars property, set right on the Flushing waterfront, provides all of the key elements they’ve been searching for.
Beachhouse and schoolhouse have a significant local and national following amongst residents and holiday visitors alike, continually attracting national food critics.
Giles Coren has described the establishments as having "world class” food hailing beachhouse as a "brilliant seafood joint … the best in Devon, England and northern Europe.”
Beachhouse was recently included in Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘The Best Beach Shack Restaurants in the Country’, The Guardian’s ‘ten of the best beach bars and cafes in Europe’ and Tatler’s ‘The best seaside restaurants for balmy summer days.’
William’s family are from Falmouth so the couple have always felt a pull to the surrounding area with its ever-evolving creative food and drink scene.
Tamara says, “William and I received the keys to the Seven Stars on October 1 and we immediately got to work, closing the doors for a full structural refurbishment.
"We’re aiming for an opening date of early Spring 2023, with rooms following on thereafter. We’ll be ensuring that all the food and most of the drinks, apart from some wines and spirits, will be Cornish, with the pub remaining a great local drinking spot, whilst building a solid reputation as a destination dining location.”
William says, “As you can imagine, we are abuzz with ideas, concepts and plans. The Flushing community has been amazingly welcoming and we’re very grateful for that.
"This most definitely feels like my family and I are coming home to this beguiling corner of Cornwall and we can’t wait to get the pub turned around and open again with our beachhouse DNA additions.
"We’re very interested to hear from local Cornish producers and suppliers with the highest quality offerings as we evolve our new, ultra-seasonal menus and food and drinks offerings.”
