It isn't a sight you would normally expect to see on a Friday morning.

But as temperatures dropped to -4 in parts of Cornwall last night, Mylor Creek was hit with freezing temperatures - and as a result a large part of the estuary was covered in ice this morning.

While it's an unusual sight for the River Fal estuary, the creek isn’t the first large stretch of water that has been affected by the freezing temperature during this week.

The Boating Lake at Coronation Park in Helston was said to be completely frozen over on Sunday, and there have also been pictures of Swanpool Lake in Falmouth with a frozen surface.

However, while it is more common for still water to freeze over in sub-zero temperatures, it is not so often you see tidal water suffering the same effect.

There is some good news for people hoping to travel next week, however.

Temperatures will gradually rise over the next seven days, with light showers and a moderate breeze forecast for Christmas Day - although that does rule out a white Christmas once again, for Cornwall at least.
