The extension of opening hours at a student night at a popular Falmouth pub has been so successful, the owner wants to make it permanent.
The Kings in Church Street has run the student night every Wednesday until 2.30am for the past 18 weeks following the granting of temporary extension.
The student night has been so successful they now want to make the extension permanent.
At a meeting of Falmouth Town Council’s licensing committee last week, owner Simon Fudge told councillors that opening later was of benefit for all night time businesses in Falmouth.
“Speaking to the door staff down at Mangos and they’re saying they’re having less bother on a Wednesday because they [the students] have got somewhere else to go.
“At the end of the day the nightlife capacity in the town is a lot smaller for the local students, let alone the local youngsters who want to come out, and this is why you tend to get the big spill out.
“We’re giving them an alternative and at least they’re off the street. It is a benefit.”
He said Falmouth University now has seven and a half thousand students and if just ten per cent, decided they were going out on a Wednesday night that’s 750 students.
“Now regardless if I’m open or not those 750 are still going to come into town. 750 is round about the capacity of us, Mangos and Toast,” he said.
Falmouth mayor Steve Eva said he’d got no problem with the extension being made permanent and neither had the licensing officer.
“I know Simon, everybody in Falmouth probably knows Simon, he’s always run this establishment properly and I think he would run this properly. I’ve got no problem with it so I am going to recommend as set out.”

Cllr Laurie McGowan raised concerns about nearby residents and late night noise.
“I do get calls about noise from different establishments,” he said. “I haven’t had any calls about this one, but residents who do live in the town do have some concerns.”
Cllr Eva pointed out that despite his concerns, Cllr Magowan had said he had had no complaints about The Kings, even though the extension had been running for 18 weeks.
Councillors voted to recommend the extension of hours on a Wednesday to be allowed to continue.
