The Cabinet Office has announced the New Year Honours List for 2023, marking the incredible public service of individuals across the UK.

Recipients in the New Year Honours List have been awarded for their outstanding contributions across all parts of the UK for their work in areas including sustained public service, youth engagement, and community work.

And this year, eight people from Cornwall have made the list for their contribution to community services.

Cornwall awardees are:

Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)

Floyd Steadman, Ludgvan - Floyd has been awarded for his services to Rugby Union Football, education, and charity.

Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)

Judith Backus, Truro - Judith is the Founder of Hidden Help. Hidden Help provides services to disadvantaged people living in Cornwall. Hidden Help helps those needing a new home and a fresh start with recycled household items from the local community.

Martin Dorey, Bude - Martin is the Founder of the #2minute campaigns, which provides service to recycling and the environment. The campaign encourages people to take two minutes to pick up litter at beaches in Cornwall, then upload pictures to Twitter and Instagram using #2minutes.

David Hall-Davies, St Just - Chief Executive Office and Company Secretary of Cornwall YMCA David for his services to Young people and the community in Cornwall. YMCA Cornwall is an independent local charity that provides supported housing for vulnerable young people aged 16 - 24 who are homeless or at risk.

Ian Jones, Truro - Chief Executive for Volunteer Cornwall, for volunteering services in Cornwall. This long-established Cornish charity prompts and developed voluntary action and Citizenship. Working in partnership with local people, the voluntary community, and public sectors to create inclusive resilient communities.

Susan Sayer, Hayle - Founder and Director, The Cornwall Seal Research Trust, for wildlife protection and conservation services.

The research trust is an evidence-based conservation charity that supports a large network of active citizen scientists who routinely survey seals on their local patch to learn more about grey seals, a globally rare marine mammal for which the UK has a special legal responsibility to protect.

Michael Weeks, Camborne - Operations Manager, Cornwall Cricket League, for services to Cricket in Cornwall.

Rosalie Whitlock, Penzance - Fundraising Secretary, Penlee Lifeboat Station, Royal National Lifeboat Institution for services to Maritime Safety.
