A respected jeweller and optician who was a descendant of Henry Trengrouse and whose legacy continues today has died at the age of 90.

Bryan Hubert Trengrouse Wearne passed away on December 30 and his funeral will take place later this month.

Bryan ran Wearnes Jewellers in Camborne and Helston until his retirement in 1995, when the shops were taken over by his stepdaughter Sarah.

The business was founded by his grandfather William Wearne in 1869 and then passed to his father Hubert, before Bryan took it over.

Alongside the jewellers in both Camborne and Helston, Bryan followed in his father's footsteps in becoming an ophthalmic optician, having trained at City University in London. He also opened a standalone opticians in Redruth.

Bryan was a Camborne boy at heart, living independently, just a stone’s throw from Tehidy Golf Club, up until his 90th birthday.

His father had been a founding member of the club, which opened in 1922, who went on to be captain in 1937, and president between 1961 and 1973, while his mother was lady captain in 1935.

Bryan was also a keen golfer, and a member of Tehidy Golf Club until very recently.

Alongside golf, rugby was his other sporting love, and he could often be found at the grounds of Camborne RFC supporting his home team – particularly looking forward to the Boxing Day local derby between Camborne and Redruth each year.

His support continued to Cornwall RFU also, and should no local rugby be taking place he would cheer on England on TV or sometimes in person.

Bryan would often travel to Twickenham with his late brother Michael for matches, particularly when Cornwall played there.

His stepdaughter Sarah said: “He was a Cornishman through and through.

“He was a man’s man, and liked a whisky and a cigar!

“But he had a very kind heart and was well loved in the community. He was a great family man and a respected businessman.”

Bryan is survived by his two daughters Alison and Louise , stepson Robert and stepdaughter Sarah, as well as granddaughters Maeve and Branwen, and step-granddaughters Claudia, Bella and Grace.

Sarah added: “He has been a tower of support. He was a lovely person.”

Bryan was educated at Truro School before his training at City University. As well as a jeweller and optician he was also a skilled clockmaker.

He always maintained strong links with the community, with Wearnes Jewellers having had a long association with Holmans, producing the long-service awards for mining engineers.

Wearnes has also always produced the silver and gold medals presented to Camborne School of Mines students upon graduation, a service that continues to this day.

A funeral for Bryan will take place on Tuesday, January 31 at 11am at Wesley Methodist Church, Camborne, with the service led by Rev Mark Richards. People are asked to wear black and Cornish tartan.

The service will be followed by a wake at Tehidy Golf Club.

Donations in lieu of family flowers can be made for Marie Curie at the service, or via Colin Matthews Funeral Directors.

Bryan died at Penhellis Nursing Home, having been able to enjoy a final family Christmas at Sarah’s home, Lismore in Helston.

Alongside its websales, Wearnes Jewellers continues to trade in Helston and Falmouth, after the Camborne branch relocated in 2012.
