A CONTROVERSIAL Conservative Councillor who spent more time overseas than at local council meetings has resigned.
Cornwall Council has confirmed to The Packet that Tara Sherfield Wong, Cornwall Councillor for Long Rock, Marazion and St Erth, resigned from her position on Tuesday, January 3.
According to Cornwall Council, leader of the Council, Linda Taylor, will "act as the elected Member contact for this division" for the time being.
The 26-year-old councillor, who had not been seen since a neighbourhoods’ scrutiny committee back in October of last year, had been criticised for seemingly spending more time on founding her 'Conservative Friends of America' and 'Conservative Friends of Saudi Arabia' projects than on her duties in the Duchy.
The now-former councillor had been elected to represent the people of Long Rock, Marazion and St Erth back in May 2021 but had since received complaints from five parish councils complaining she had been neglecting her duties.
Dealing with the complaint, a Cornwall Council monitoring officer upheld the decision, stating: "The independent person’s view is that, from the evidence seen, the subject member has, since being elected, demonstrated a lack of commitment to the community for which she serves.
"The independent person’s view is that, as a council member, Cllr Sherfield-Wong has in this matter failed to promote and support these principles by her leadership and example and has failed to act in a way that preserves public confidence."
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: "I can confirm that Cllr Sherfield-Wong resigned from her position as councillor for the Long Rock, Marazion and St Erth Electoral Division yesterday.
"The Leader of the Council, Cllr Linda Taylor, will act as the elected Member contact for this division in the first instance.
"A date for the by-election will be provided shortly."
The Packet has contacted Tara Sherfield Wong for comment.
