OLD FACES at a football club in Cornwall were reunited as part of a celebration of those who got the club up and running way back when.
On Saturday, January 14, the players & managers of the 80's & 90's were invited to join Wendron Utd for a day of football.
The club wanted to acknowledge the part played by those who had played a pivotal role in getting the club started and being part of the journey since
The plan was to include all Wendron fixtures on the day but the 4th & 5th team games had to be cancelled because of the weather, however, fortunately, the main pitch was playable.
Wendron Utd played Callington Town and those present saw an excellent performance by the home team, who were 8-1 winners, to enhance their position in the title race.
This set the platform for the next match, a 40-minute friendly game under lights, involving players of the past.
A former player, Andrew Hendra, who once lived in Stithians, timed his holiday, home from Australia, to be available for the match. The game, which ended 2-1, was fairly even and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Players that had represented the club in the 80s, 90s and early 00s played out a Wendron v Wendron fixture to honour those that helped lay the foundations for what the club is achieving on and off the pitch today.
The game itself ended 2-1 to ‘Wendron Yellows’ thanks to two goals from Justin Searle (who played 90 minutes and scored in the third team’s fixture earlier that day) and Paul Mitchell replying for ‘Wendron Claret & Blues’.
Some recognisable faces in the game and ‘Wendron legends’ included: Antony Williams, who has racked up over 650 appearances for the club, Steve O’Brian, Justin Rozzell, Robert Hague (current third team manager), Matt Potts (current second team assistant manager), Craig Martin, Chris Wolstencroft, Matt Chappell (who was given the man of the match award), Will Scoley, Steve Kemp, Andrew Hendra, Colin Kettle, Paul Mitchell, Steve Murgatroyd, Kevin Maguire, James Varah, Kevin Murgatroyd, Dave Toy, Mike Newbury, Mark Wood, Simon Williamson, Justin Searle, Tony Harris, Simon Williamson, Reg Pearson, Dean Bray, Paul Curnow, Neil Roberts, Andy Mitchell, the first team management of Mike O’Neil, Josh McDonald and Bryan Scoffin as well as several others who supported the event.
After game, the next stop was the clubhouse for some refreshments and to reminisce about teams of the past, those goals, and what standard they would have played in the current day.
