Falmouth lifeboat was launched at the weekend after a 44 foot steel yacht with three people on board ran aground off St Mawes Castle.

The all-weather lifeboat launched on Saturday, January 21 for the third time this year .

The lifeboat crew were paged at 11.18am and the station’s Severn class lifeboat Richard Cox Scott launched at 11.30am to help the yacht and crew grounded on Lugo Rock, off St Mawes Castle.

The yacht’s crew had alerted the UK Coastguard by mobile phone after their vessel had gone aground.

The lifeboat, under the command of Deputy Second Coxswain Dave Nicoll, arrived on scene at 11.39am. Sea conditions were slight with a force 4 east south east wind and excellent visibility.

The all-weather lifeboat’s small inflatable Y boat was prepared and launched so a check on the yacht could be made and also to transfer a towline. The lifeboat’s salvage pump was also made ready in case it was needed.

However, the yacht refloated on the incoming tide before the tow could be connected. There was no damage to the vessel and its engine was started. The lifeboat escorted the yacht back to its mooring off Coastlines Wharf in Falmouth.

After recovering the Y boat and being released from service, the lifeboat returned to station, arriving back at 12.48pm.
