A bid to make permanent the temporary late night opening hours of a student night at a popular Falmouth pub has been refused.

Cornwall Council’s licensing committee refused the application for The Kings on Church Street this afternoon after taking in the implications of the newly extended Cumulative Impact Zones (CIZ).

The Kings in Church Street has run the student night every Wednesday until 2.30am for the past 18 months following the granting of temporary extension.

It had applied to make that extension permanent as the student night has been so successful.

A recent meeting of Falmouth Town Council’s licensing committee had voted to recommend approval for the application.

Simon Fudge told Falmouth councillors at the time that opening later was of benefit for all night time businesses in Falmouth.

He said other venues had less bother when The Kings was open because it gave the other clubs more capacity and extra door staff.

“At the end of the day the nightlife capacity in the town is a lot smaller for the local students, let alone the local youngsters who want to come out, and this is why you tend to get the big spill out.

“We’re giving them an alternative and at least they’re off the street. It is a benefit.”

He said Falmouth University now has seven and a half thousand students and if just ten per cent, decided they were going out on a Wednesday night that’s 750 students.

Cumulative impact zones relate to a concentration of licensed premises which is having a serious detrimental impact on the area with regards to anti-social behaviour.

The zones are decided after considering crime data from the police, alcohol related health evidence from public health, noise complaints, information from town councils and residents.
