One of Helston's well-known bakers will say goodbye to her customers this month, as she prepares to hang up her apron for the last time.

After 27 years of preparing and cooking pasties, cakes and sandwiches for customers in Helston, Mary Paul will be retiring at the end of this month to spend more time with her family, including her two grandchildren, Ivy and Remy.

Mary, 60, and her husband Surrinder, known to everyone as Sinbad, opened Tinners in 2020 after departing from Philps a few weeks prior.

Before owning Tinners, Mary worked for Horse & Jockey for 24 years and for Warrens in St Just during the company's early years.

However, Mary feels that now is a good time to bid farewell to the town and focus on spending time with her three sons - Andrew and his daughter Ivy, William and his child Remy and another son Michael.

Sinbad will also leave the business and return to Serco where he will work several days a week.

With their three children living in Helston, Mary is looking forward to the future.

She told the Packet: “I am looking forward to retiring. I have done this all my life, so it will be nice to chill back and spend time with the grandchildren, Ivy and Remy, who will be two in April."

However, she said her departure did come with a tinge of sadness, adding: "I will miss the customers and meeting people.”

As Mary and Sinbad prepare to leave the business, plans for the future are being discussed with a nearby business in the town.

Although currently not set in stone, plans for the shop are said to include keeping the pasties but adding more elements, including providing more of a street food slant to it and serving breakfast trays to the public.
