STUDENTS in Falmouth have joined forces with Red Bull and celebrated ‘doodling muralist’ Dave Draws as part of a special partnership with Red Bull Doodle Art.

The partnership is a student-focused initiative and global competition which aims to empower a new generation of artists through the 'magic' of doodling.

Red Bull’s Doodle Art competition encouraged individuals to let their minds wander through imaginative doodles and Red Bull were looking to create a bespoke doodle piece in collaboration with the university.

Falmouth will have 13 students involved in the collaboration, representing a range of courses including Fine Art, Illustration, Games Art, Textiles, Business & Digital Marketing.

Dave’s trademark is his doodle maps that combine his unique doodle style with cartoonish illustrations creating a map of a city.

Dave Draws said: "It’s nice to see all the different styles of the students’ work – it’s good to work with them, they’re really receptive and they’re bringing some great ideas.

"I’m helping them out answering their questions, but otherwise I’m letting them doodle.

"The hard work is getting the landmarks in place. I spoke to the students about what it is they like about Falmouth. What’s the university experience like here? As an artist, it looks like a brilliant campus to be based at.

"I’ve worked on murals in big cities such as Paris, Prague, Hong Kong, New York. Cities tend to have big skyscrapers, in Cornwall there’s a particular type of architecture. This mural is so wide that I won’t be doing a map, but we’ll capture a mix of well-known landmarks and local businesses. There’s a lot of character in the town. It’s coming on really well...."

Student Sarah Sweeney is a 2nd year Fine Art BA student who completed the – Belmont and The Chintz doodles. Sarah said: "I always doodle! It starts with a doodle and then it becomes a painting or a sculpture. I like birds – I merge creatures with human form.  I’ve drawn Belmont studio on Falmouth campus – I’m adding creatures.

"A bird holding a palette on the roof. There are always birds sitting on the roof or the chimney there...Bird creatures holding paintbrushes. And The Chintz in town. The challenge is the angle we’re working at!"

I’m not a sailor though, I actually get quite travel sick! I spend a lot of time at Falmouth Docks, getting inspiration.

"When I heard about this mural and that it was about Falmouth scenery, I thought I could contribute. I do a lot of black and white line drawing. It was an opportunity that shouted out. I’ve never done anything like this..."
