As Marie Curie celebrates its 75th year, the Helston & The Lizard Fundraising Group says it has raised £101,852 since it was set up in 2016.

These funds will stay in Cornwall to support the Marie Curie nurses who work tirelessly throughout the Duchy to ensure that more terminally-ill people can spend the time they have left in the comfort of their own homes surrounded by the people they love.

The nurses support those with any terminal illness – not just those with cancer, but also those with Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Chronic Pulmonary Disease and Heart Failure.

They work from 10pm to 7am enabling family members and carers to get a good night’s rest and respite from their caring duties. They also help to alleviate some of the pressures on our over-stretched hospitals. A day-time service has also recently been added.

It costs £20 an hour to support a Marie Curie nurse, or £180 for a full night-time shift so every penny raised makes an enormous difference.

The Helston & The Lizard Fundraising Group says it would like to thank all the local people for supporting them by donating at supermarket and street collections and all its other fundraising events. This is particularly important in this, our Marie Curie 75th Anniversary Year.

New volunteers to join our friendly group are always welcome, or anyone who can spare a couple of hours to collect can contact Margaret Riley, Chair of the Helston & The Lizard Fundraising Group on Margaret_riley32@hotmail.com or 0773 4441436.
