Following the closure of the last bank in Helston in January, MP Derek Thomas has revealed a new banking hub will be coming to the town.
When Lloyds closed in January, many Helston people had to face travelling to the nearest branch in Falmouth if they wanted more than basic banking tasks - a 25-minute drive away - with Helston’s Post Office the only other alternative, offering limited services such as deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks.
However, Derek Thomas MP who has been campaigning for a banking hub in Helston for a while, has revealed that the inter-bank payment system LINK has recognised the community’s needs and will be opening a banking hub.
In a social media post posted today (Wednesday, March 22) Derek said: “When banks close, it needn’t be the end of in-person banking.
“Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone.
“They have a counter service, where customers of any bank can carry out their regular banking transactions, and private spaces for customers to speak to community bankers from their own bank on different days.
“I have been campaigning for a banking hub in Helston now that the last bank has closed, and I am pleased that LINK has recognised the community’s need and will be opening a banking hub in the town.
An opening date for the banking hub has yet to be announced. The Packet will keep you up to date when we have more information.
